Candlelight quilt guild

This guild was started in March of 1984 when two quilt enthusiasts placed an advertisement in the local newspaper asking for people to join them to create community service quilts. The evening timing was a benefit to working quilters that were not able to attend local daytime guild meetings. By July of 1984, the guild was comprised of approximately 20 members. The original members called themselves Quilter's Anonymous and met at United Church of Christ in Liverpool the second Tuesday of each month at 7 pm. The guild changed its name to Candlelight Quilt Guild in July of 1984. Their first community service project was a queen-sized Bear's Paw quilt that was donated to Ronald McDonald House in the fall of 1984.

The first quilt show was presented in 1986 at the United Church of Christ in Bayberry.

In October of 1988, the candlelight quilters started meeting in the cafeteria at VanBuren Elementary School in Baldwinsville. Since then, our membership has grown to over 60 members, but our commitment to community service has remained a constant. Candlelight Quilt Guild has donated quilted items to many local and national organizations including: United Church of Christ, VanBuren Elementary School, the Neonatal Units at local hospitals, Vera House, Project Linus and Quilts of Valor.

Guild meetings consist of a short business meeting, Sew and Share, and a program, which can be anything from a picnic to hands on workshops to Trunk shows and lectures by local as well as national quilting teachers. Some past speakers have been Barbra Trudeau, Genie Barnes, Clara Pope, Joan Ford and Sharon Stroud.

We hold a quilt show every odd numbered year at VanBuren Elementary School (our meeting place) and devote at least one meeting a year to completing community service projects. Our meetings are still the second Tuesday of each month and begin at 7 pm. New members are always encouraged to attend and bring something to share. We have members in all ability ranges, from beginners all the way up to a Master Quilter. You'll never go home without learning something new!
